Meteor Burst Detection

Club member Stan Nelson actively monitors meteor forward-scatter signals from high powered TV and FM stations and NAVSPASUR radar signals. Sudden signal enhancements caused by a meteor's entry into the ionosphere are captured and counted using software written by Pierre Terrier.

Here are some links to get you started

Meteor 7 - A DOS-based program written by Pierre Tierre. This program uses a interface box to the PC's RS-232 COM port and counts signal enhancements via an FM radio tuned to an unused channel. I use it on 88.7 MHz. Software is free. He provides a schematic for the simple one IC interface which can be built from Radio Shack parts. It is powered by the COM port.    http://page.to/meteor//page.to/meteor

Audio Sprectrum Analysis - Spectrogram Ver. 15 by Richard Horne - Here's a great sound card audio spectrum program that I use to display meteor returns. A must for any work with signals that are fed into your sounds card. You can save incoming signals to WAV files for later analysis. It's Shareware - about $45 to register

SpaceWeather News - Dr. Tony Phillips daily e-newletter about  space weather. Free. Be sure to get on the mailing list.     www.spaceweather.com

COAA's R_Meteor program cost $29. With it, you can record meteors with a sound card which is connected to a SSB receiver tuned to produce a 1000 Hz. beat. It creates a bitmapped image of the noise and meteor 'blips' when a signal is detected. It creates a 2.4 Mb. file every 4 hours. I run it almost continuously on 217 MHz. (NAVSPASUR). http://sapp.telepac.pt/coaa/r_meteor.htm

International Meteor Assoc.   Here's a great source of visual meteor information and radio.

Shuttle detected in final moments on forward scatter radar captured with COAA's R_Meteor.

Here's a bmp of the echo I obtained as the shuttle flew through the beam between Roswell and Lake Kickapoo:
